Palm Pilot Software – What Makes a PDA More

Palm Pilots have committed a hostile takeover when it comes to the world of organizational devices. Perhaps this was an easy feat considering their primary competition when they came on the market was paper organizers or those little electronic address books. Whatever the case was, the busy people of the world are better off because of it! What was once a simple organizational gadget has grown to encompass various Palm Pilot software, email, internet access, and even wireless connectivity. However, with all of these bells and whistles, your PDA is still only as good as the software it has on it to utilize. Without the Palm Pilot software, you are still just dealing with an electronic organizer, instead of a portable miniature computer, which is what PDA’s have become.

Most PDA’s come standard with a certain number of programs. However, a whole other world of Palm Pilot software exists to evolve your handheld into an impressive little device.

The standard software programs included on most PDA’s are pocket versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. They also usually come with Adobe Reader, as well as Outlook to manage your email and other calendar features. All of these programs are great for word processing, presentation development, and other general office duties; however, there is so much more waiting out there for your Palm Pilot.

Palm has available various software expansion cards and software on CD-ROM, not to mention the plethora of shareware available to download on the internet.

The first question to consider is whether you want additional software on your PDA for fun and games, education, or to increase functionality.

Within the realm of fun and games, you have all kinds of entertainment available. Do you remember playing Pong on your Atari? If you want to take a trip back, you can purchase the Atari Retro Card for your PDA and play 7 original Atari games, like Asteroids, Pong, or Missile Command. Atari not your thing? How about football? If you are a die hard Madden fan, you can play one of the most popular football games available on your Palm Pilot no matter where you are. There are poker games, billiards, pinball – every game imaginable is probably available in one format or another with Palm.

If games are not your cup of tea, you can always look to self-improvement. There is Palm Pilot software with various encyclopedia programs, dictionaries, bible study programs, and even a thesaurus. You can never go wrong with investing in your education; with Palm, you can utilize that investment while you wait at the doctor’s office or in the elevator.

Functionality is also an excellent objective when choosing software. You can utilize a map program to help you navigate through unknown territory, or translation software if language is a barrier. While fun and games may be entertaining, they are of little help when you are lost. With this software on your PDA, you can utilize the kind of software that is worth its weight in gold if you are ever in a situation where you need it.
